Urban Family Crown and Key

A custom Mox Boarding House Beer

Mox Boarding House and Urban Family Brewing have joined forces! We couldn’t be more excited to announce Crown and Key – an Imperial Peach Sour Ale brewed in celebration of Urban Family’s new brewery in Ballard, WA and our new store opening soon in Portland, OR.

Urban Family; a Local Brewery

Urban Family first opened in 2011 in a spot along Ballard Avenue before making their home across the canal in Magnolia. We are delighted that they have come back to Ballard and that we can have this wonderful local partnership. Their new location opened this past February in Ballard’s brewery district (1103 NW 52nd St., Seattle, WA). We hope you will all join us in welcoming them home!

We at Mox have been big fans of Urban Family over the years. When we found out that some of their folks were fans of ours, this collaboration was a no-brainer. It turns out we have a lot in common: our spaces exist to cultivate deeper relationships amongst ourselves and our communities, whether that’s over a board game, a beer, or both!

The Crown and Key Art

Accomplished artist and illustrator Erick Lingbloom created the amazing art on the label of the Crown and Keys beer that is also shown at the top of this blog piece. He is inspired by art at Cafe Mox created by artist Joe Vollan. Don’t forget to stop by Mox to pick up a playmat depicting the Crown and Key art.

“I wanted to relate the imagery to what I felt represented recognizable aspects of Mox– namely, board games! There are some murals in the Ballard space that are so fantastic, depicting some pirate mice. With the title of Crown and Key in mind, the mice were an easy link that gave me a kind of context to build a narrative around. I liked the idea of being able to show the keys and crown from the logo in a situation that felt like it had a story behind it. From there it was natural to draw influence from genres like fantasy and sci-fi. I’ve always loved the visual tradition of fantasy art, and was excited to attempt to make something that looked like it could be used on a professional board game box.” – Erick Lingbloom – Urban Family

Stop by for a cold beer and board games

As soon as the Mox restaurants re-open we will be proudly serving Crown and Key at all of our locations, both on tap and in the bottle. Grab a few friends, come out, and let us recommend a game for you all to play while you enjoy this tasty beer. And make sure you pay our friends at Urban Family a visit – their new brewery is less than a mile from our Seattle location.
