Play For Faye

(Editor’s note: This article originally appeared on the Card Kingdom Blog.)

Community is one of our core values here at Card Kingdom, and we believe in giving back to the communities that support us. That’s why our retail division, Mox Boarding House, includes a charitable giving branch (Mox ENGAGE) that runs yearly fundraising events in our local game stores. For the past four years, ENGAGE has rallied game companies in the greater Seattle area to support local non-profits through The Gauntlet, our annual tabletop gaming tournament, and we were planning on expanding our roster of charity events this year by creating one specifically for the Magic community.

As luck may have it, esteemed Magic commentator and content producer Cedric Phillips was looking to host a Magiccharity event of his own, and we happened to be right in his backyard. Cedric approached us about hosting an event for the Seattle Magic community unlike any other, where the focus would be on camaraderie rather than competition. The concept was a carnival-like mini-convention: Players who signed up for the event would receive tickets that they could spend at several stations – on-demand drafts, spellslinging with Wizards of the Coast R&D, or getting signatures from Magic artists. All proceeds would benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, in honor of Cedric’s mother, Faye, who was going through her second bout of breast cancer.

Play For Faye became a reality on October 7th, as players from our local community gathered to play Magic, bid on auction items, and watch the Magic World Championships. Sam Tang of Kitchen Table Magic fame was there to capture the action on video for his new YouTube channel, Play MTG – you can watch the full video here. By the end of the weekend, we had raised nearly $8,000 for BCRF.

Thank you to all our spellslingers, artists, donors, and players – we couldn’t have accomplished this amazing feat without you. If you’d like to continue supporting Play For Faye, visit our BCRF fundraising page, and stay tuned for updates on how you can purchase exclusive swag from the event.
