It is October, the official start to the spooookkkkyyy season! We couldn’t be more excited to announce that we have found the perfect Publisher Spotlight for the Halloween month, Chaosium! Time to stop by Mox, grab a copy of Call of Cthulhu, and really get into the spirit of things.
Chaosium was founded in 1975 by game designer Greg Stafford. They have been responsible for publishing countless excellent roleplaying and board games including Call of Cthulhu, RuneQuest, King Arthur Pendragon, and HeroQuest.
“The first published RPG was Dungeons & Dragons, shortly followed by some other imitative games. Chaosium, however, was never content to imitate but published games that were original in style of play, content and design. We quickly became renowned for our originality and creativity, and were responsible for introducing many things to the hobby that are standard today.”– Greg Stafford
Call of Cthulhu (7th edition)
Diving into the worlds originally developed by H.P. Lovecraft’s short stories, players assume the roles of investigators solving mysteries with an evergrowing sense of madness and horror in the air. This isn’t your classic hack and slash adventure where you fight dragons for glory and gold. In Call of Cthulhu your fears come out to face you, how long can you move forward before they get the best of you? From the Starter Set to the core rulebook and many supporting modules, Call of Cthulhu is one of the most thematic role-playing games to exist.
Würm is a rules-lite RPG set in the last period of the Ice Age 35,000 years ago. There are no attributes or skills; characters instead have traits such as Secret of the Bear or Eye of the Panther. The beauty of a system like this is it allows for truly open storytelling that can be a historically accurate survival game in the tundra, or a tale of fantasy and whimsy in an ice kingdom.
Heroic fantasy set in the world of Glorantha with themes heavily influenced by the Bronze Age, RuneQuest is an epic adventure RPG for those who want a deeper dive into a complex world. Sheilds can be shattered, limbs disabled, and a lucky shot can take down the toughest of enemies. The gameplay features deep character customization and an intuitive percentile dice system. The world is richly detailed with fully fleshed out gods, cultures, and histories. If you want a game with lore to explore rules to use, this is it.
